October Feast Table

It’s another new month.  Time for a look at the October Feast Table.  There is a lot going on this month.  If you are new to the idea of living the liturgical year in your home, don’t allow yourself to get overwhelmed!  Just start with one simple tradition and add a little every year.

Wondering what a feast table is?

  • Why I started the feast table in our home
  • How we do family devotions around the feast table
  • Here are all the feast table posts thus far
  • The planner I use to keep track of all those special feast days

Our October Feast Table Bookbasket

  • Angel in the Waters (for Pro-Life Month) ^*
  • Catholic Children’s Treasure Box (These are definitely an investment, but are so worth it and will become a treasured addition to your Catholic home library.  There are several well illustrated short stories of St. Therese through the beginning books that teach little ones about the saint and Church teachings.  The books also follow Wupsy, a Guardian Angel, and would be appropriate for that feast on the 2nd too!) ^*
  • The Little Flower of Jesus (1st)
  • Therese:  The Little Flower of Lisieux (1st)
  • The Little Flower:  The Story of St. Therese of the Child Jesus (1st)
  • St. Therese and the Roses (Vision Series) (1st)
  • St. Therese:  The Little Flower (1st)
  • Olivia and the Little Way and Olivia’s Gift (1st)
  • A Book of Angels:  Stories of Angels in the Bible (2nd)
  • The Adventures of Loupio (4th) ^* (a comic book series our boys have enjoyed)
  • The Good Man of Assisi (4th) ^*
  • St. Francis and the Wolf (4th)
  • St. Francis and the Proud Cow (4th)
  • Francis Woke up Early (4th)
  • Francis:  The Poor Man of Assisi (4th)

Other October Feast Table Resources:

  • A Rosary Flip Book   The beautiful art contained on this flip book’s pages, makes it the perfect aid for helping your whole family take up the Rosary during this month dedicated to the devotion.  (Don’t forget to take up the Rosary in a Month Challenge (with printable)!)  It would also be a beautiful addition to any feast table.  I’m thinking of adding it to our own.

  • Rosary Coloring Book  Adult coloring is all the rage these days and this coloring book takes it up a notch with images of the mysteries prayed in the Rosary.  It might be the perfect cure all for those of us whose minds tend to wander.
  • The Holy Rosary Audio from Holy Heroes provides a simple way to pray along with your children.  I own one CD from Holy Heroes and am forever trying to get up the gumption to purchase the whole set.  I may be doing that soon and then gifting one CD at a time to my children for birthdays, Baptism days, Christmas, Easter, feast days, and other such occasions.

 Our October Feast Table Plans

We already have a few simple October traditions in place, but one or two of the following celebrations are new to us!

Chocolate Eclairs for St. Therese (October 1st)

I once read a story about St. Therese loving Chocolate Eclairs (is it any wonder I love this saint?).  We’ll be whipping up a simpler version of this treat to celebrate her feast day and reading some good books about her.

The Guardian Angel Prayer and Food for the Angels!(October 2nd)

We’ll be taking some time to brush up on this prayer.  I don’t think my youngest ones have it down pat.  We’ll also be talking a little about the Guardian Angels and reading some stories of Wupsy from Catholic Children’s Treasure Box.  This set of books is a great investment your Catholic home library.  Our children just love the stories and they start many great conversations among us.  Another great conversation starter is a yummy Angel Food cake!

Animal Cracker Trail Mix for St. Francis (October 4th)

This is such a simple tradition that we do every year.  In fact, all I have to do is hand the kids the animal crackers and let them stir in any additions they want to make.  Then we serve it out in bowls and I read a good story about St Francis.  What could be simpler?

Reading more St. Theresa of Avila (October 15th)

I’ve been slowly reading St. Theresa’s autobiography and have been blown away with the spiritual treasures and wisdom contained in this jewel of a book.  It isn’t very often we read about a saint straight from their own heart, and it is a real gift to see how she ascended toward God slowly but surely.  It isn’t the easiest read, so I’ve been working at it for some time.  I intend to get a little further on in the book this month.

Polish fare for St. John Paul II (October 22nd)

Marrying into a family with Polish heritage means I like to remember the Polish saints.  It is as easy as whipping together some American Pierogi, which is always a favorite with the whole family.  It may not be authentic Polish food, but it helps put the Saint up front and start the conversation!
